Search Engine Optimization explained so a Newbie can Understand by Jim Horn
Let me start out explaining why I am writing this. One year ago, heck 5 months ago if you had ask me what
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was I could not have told you. I do not plan to fail at building a business
online. So therefor I have been studing everything I can about working at home on my computer. I realize that
I still do not know much about SEO but I have learned enough to explain a little to Newbies so when they see
(SEO) they will have a little understanding about it.
So here goes.
Imagine that the search engine, google, yahoo, and msn they are the major players, are the engine of a train.
I am the caboose (my online business), my goal is to become one of the first few cars behind the engine.
How do I get up that far from being at the back of the train. Well it is not easy but it is also not impossible.
We do this by making our car more noticeable by the engine. If we become important to the engine it
will move us closer to the front.
You ask how do we do this. We tell the engine about our cargo (niche market) and the more it knows the closer
we get to the front, (page). For an example lets say you are hauling (selling) candles and candle products.
We tell the engine the kind and purpose (keywords) of our cargo.
First thing find a domain name pertaining to candles that has not been taken. Try to get the word candle in some
for in your domain name. Your domain name will be the url displayed in your browser. I can gurantee
you that you will not get, http://www.candles.com. You do a search until you find one that pertains to your
cargo. (Example http://www.your name candles.com).
The car has to have a name so we know who it belongs to like: Candles for every occasion,(page title) this would
go in your page source after the first head (H1). Click view then source in your tool bar to view a page source. You will
see meta names. More on that later.
Let the engine what types of products (keywords) our cargo is. We might tell the engine we have, candles,
candle holders, wax candles, candles with aroma. You will see this as meta name=keywords in the page source.
Now lets write up a manifest (content) telling what we have, what its benefits are and what the finall out come will be
In this manifest make sure we use our product names (keywords) several times. Mainly in the first paragraph and the last.
To sum up what each word Search Engine Optimization is:
Search= You looking for a product or information on the internet.
Engine= The site with all the advertisements of product or information you are looking for.
Optimization= Keywords telling the engine where to look for the product or information being search for.
If you have a better understanding what SEO is great, if you do not understand any of this at least I have you thinking.
Understand that I am not an expert on SEO. I recommend that you get a experienced marketer to do this for you.
The one that I use is and recommend is Help to Update your Website.
