The Evolution of TV Tuners

Televisions operate by having signals which they receive from a widespread communications network into something that the TV will understand. This is where the TV tuner comes in. The TV tuner will take these signals, and convert them into images and sound, and thus allowing a television box to function properly.

Nowadays, TV tuners can be used to turn computers into portable televisions, and these specific types of tuners for the computer are called TV Tuner cards. Many countries broadcast television programs for free, so it is possible to watch television on the computer without the need to rely on a subscription to a cable service.

One of the advantages of watching television through a TV Tuner card is that it removes the geographical barrier that would usually obstruct a standard television. For example, if you wanted to relax and watch your favourite channels on TV away from home, a TV Tuner and a laptop can provide you with a quick and easy solution.

Think back to the very first televisions – the dial that is used to change the channels is an example of some of the oldest TV tuners. Now, a TV tuner can essentially be a USB memory stick that even comes with a remote control to help you change the channel. These types of TV tuners require nothing more than some basic installation and afterwards will be ready to receive signals and convert a laptop / PC into a new television station, as simple as using a USB memory stick.

TV Tuners also come in the form of an express card. This is commonly used for desktops that are often used as a TV station. The express card can be installed into a PCI/PCIe slot, which is usually where a graphics card and other hardware components of a computer are installed into. These TV tuners will then act as part of the computer and will pick up signals without having the need to use a USB. This saves the time and effort if you want to watch TV without having to find your TV tuner to plug in every single time.

TV tuners have come a long way from being just used as a component of a standard television to a something that can change the function of a device to act like a television. A TV tuner will pick up signals wherever you are (as long as they are being broadcasted in the region where you use it) and will allow you to watch different channels. The beauty of this concept is that even in a place where you may not have access to a television you can still convert a device like your laptop as a substitute.
