LED Power Supply
LED technology has been in the technological circles for less than a century already yet it has not been put to productive use up until the 60’s and 70’s. For many, its prohibitive cost relegated it to a few select applications. Lately, it has found its usefulness in more and more purposes. An LED is basically driven by an LED power supply and it is usually running on Direct Current or DC. It is not impossible, though, to see special applications running on Alternating Current or AC.
Some History
In the 1920’s, the light emitting diode was first discovered and shown to the scientific community. Although it was a marvel at that time, there seems to be no particular use for this invention. The cost of producing this bulb seemed too high to warrant a need for commercial production. And for the succeeding many decades, it seemed to bolster the notion that it is one of the many novelties that are nice to know but imprudent to mass produce.
However, with the advent of the electronic craze sweeping the world in the 60’s, there appeared a few commercial applications for this LED technology. Gadgets and electronic devices that need to show alphanumeric characters and the like now had need of LED bulbs. That include the electronic calculator, the cash register and other similar devices.
The last decade saw a new application for LED technology and that is in lighting and illumination.
Advantages
Compared to the incandescent and the fluorescent bulb, the modern LED has many built in features that are arguably better. Once it is connected to the LED power supply, it can easily run on low voltage DC current making it very cost effective in terms of electricity consumption. At a time of financial difficulties, this technology is indeed coming at an opportune time. Moreover, it helps the environment in conserving fossil fuel by requiring less electricity.
Secondly, you would notice that it is not easy to replace an incandescent bulb because it is very hot when switched on. An LED bulb on the contrary does not emit heat as much. It makes for a safe fixture in the house and makes it user friendly. It therefore does not significantly raise the room temperature in the home thereby lessening the work burden of the air conditioner.
Thirdly, although you would need an LED power supply to power it up, that’s about all you need as an investment in this cost effective light system. In fact it lasts for extended periods of time that it practically pays for its cost. A typical LED bulb lasts for five years when used at an average of eight hours a day. You cannot say that for the fluorescent bulb, much less for the incandescent bulb.
A good and dependable LED power supply is therefore necessary because it causes the LED bulb to operate at its best. Unlike the fluorescent bulb that needs a warm up time, an LED bulb turns on instantly. That makes for a reliable and steady light source as long as you have your trusty LED power supply.
