The worldwide campaign to minimize the harmful effects of using plastic in the world has received positive responses from different companies and institutions. One of the steps they took is the usage of bioplastic, a material similar to plastic in terms of quality and durability but is made from different eco-friendly materials such as plant and crop residue. You may not notice it, but the plastic cup you’re holding could be made from potato and vegetable oil.

But plastic cups and bags are not the only items made with this impressive material. Here are some products that were (or will be) given a “greener” makeover.

Pens – In Australia, two companies are working on incorporating renewable thermoplastic into writing tools. Cardia Bioplastics Ltd, a bioplastic supplier partners with stationery company Beifa Group to manufacture pens made mostly with bioplastic and with only minimal materials from petroleum. These eco-friendly pens are expected to become available this year.

Computer Case – Fujitsu unveiled the first ever computer notebook made with ecological materials. Released in 2005, the FMV-BIBLO NB80K laptop boasts of thin cedar for covering and a combination of petroleum-based plastic and bioplastic for its casing and other parts. The gadget is biodegradable and is said to be more resistant to heat.

Mobile phones – Telecommunications Company Sprint and Samsung team-up to release Reclaim in 2009, a mobile phone packed with cool stuffs such as a QWERTY keypad, a 2 mega pixel camera, 32 GB storage space, GPS and many more. But its most unique feature is its environment-friendly casing – a combination of corn-based bioplastic and other recycled materials.

3D glasses – Bioplastics have also made its way into movie houses. Thanks to 3D movies. According to reports, bioplastics company Cereplast and Oculus3D are developing biodegradable 3D glasses, in response to the increasing oil prices and popularity of movies like Avatar and Clash of the Titans.

Cars – Automobile giant Toyota reveals its vision to develop a car using bioplastic made from seaweed, replacing the usual carbon fiber-based shell. Toyota claims that this new concept could be a reality in 14 years but with the increasing demand for bioplastics, the company predicts that vehicles made from plants could hit the road sooner than expected.

These are just some of the products that prove the reliability of bioplastics especially in the future.
